At St Mark’s C of E Primary School, we believe that the Year 6 residential experience is a very special part of children’s journey through our school. It provides a unique opportunity for pupils to develop their independence, confidence and resilience, while putting into practice the important life skills they have developed throughout their time at St Mark’s. Away from the familiarity of home and school, children are encouraged to take responsibility for themselves, work collaboratively, solve problems and support one another.

The residential is a wonderful opportunity for children to challenge themselves, step outside of their comfort zone and discover strengths they may not have known they possessed. Whether it is managing personal belongings, making decisions, encouraging a friend or overcoming a personal challenge, pupils develop valuable skills that will support them as they move into secondary school and beyond. It is also a chance for children to strengthen friendships, create lasting memories and celebrate the end of their primary school journey together.

Our Year 6 pupils attend Astley Burf Outdoor Education Centre, where they take part in a wide range of exciting outdoor and team-building activities. These experiences are carefully designed to develop confidence, communication, teamwork and perseverance. Activities may include climbing, abseiling, archery, canoeing, raft building, orienteering, problem-solving challenges, team games and a range of outdoor adventure activities.

The residential reflects our vision of “Loving, Growing and Succeeding Together”. Children demonstrate care and encouragement for one another, grow in independence and confidence, and experience success through trying new things and overcoming challenges. For many pupils, the Year 6 residential is one of the highlights of their time at St Mark’s and provides a fitting celebration of the journey they have shared as a school family.
